Record and transcribe tab audio with the Chrome extension

With the Notta Chrome extension, you can record audio that is played in your browser and transcribe it directly into text.

Prerequisites for using this feature
Plan: Available on all plans
Role: Available to all roles
Platform: Notta Web (Chrome browser with the extension installed)

Feature overview

By using the Notta Chrome extension, you can record audio that is playing in a browser tab and have it transcribed in real time within Notta.

This works not only for online audio and video content but also for local files opened in your browser. Please note that this feature supports audio recording and transcription only — it does not record video.

◆ Web Content

You can record and transcribe podcasts, online classes, livestreams, and other content as it plays in your browser.

It also works with content that cannot be directly imported into Notta, such as unlisted or private YouTube videos.

◆ Local Files

You can drag and drop audio or video files saved on your computer into a Chrome tab and play them there to record and transcribe the audio.

Notta does not currently support extracting only a portion of an audio file, but you can simply play back only the section you need and record that part for transcription.

Record and transcribe web content

  1. Install the Chrome extension and log in to Notta.
  2. Open the webpage want to transcribe, click the extensions icon in the top-right of Chrome, and select Notta.

    1. A small floating widget will appear on the page you are recording. You can use it to control the recording while staying focused on your web content.

      1. Finish: Click the "Finish" button to end recording.
      2. Pause / Resume: Click the "Pause / Resume" button to pause or resume recording.

Record and transcribe local files

Step 1: Open the file in Chrome

Drag a file from your desktop or a folder onto a Chrome tab. When the cursor shows the "⊕" icon, you can release it to open the file in the browser.

For more details on opening and managing tabs in Chrome, please see: Manage tabs in Chrome.

Note: Some file formats may not be supported by Chrome.

Step 2: Start recording and transcription

Once the file is open, playback controls will appear in the browser tab. Click the play button to start audio playback.

Then, launch the Notta Chrome extension and follow the same procedure as in "Record and transcribe web content" to begin recording and transcribing the audio.
