Add Japanese Vocabulary

Add Kana, Expected words, and Word type for names, technical terms, and company names to improve transcription accuracy.

Note: My Vocabulary words are not referenced during YouTube transcription.

Tip: On the Notta Web, Japanese and English dictionaries are managed separately.

Japanese vocabulary limits

You can find the maximum number of custom words you can add for each plan below.

Before & After my vocabulary

My Vocabulary entries apply only to newly created transcriptions. Below is a comparison of two results: before and after adding an entry.

Add words one by one

How to Add a My Vocabulary Entry from Settings:

Click on your profile image on top right corner > Settings.
Click My Vocabulary, switch to the Japanese Vocabulary tab, then click Add.
Enter the Kana and Expected words, choose a Word type, and click the check icon to save the word.

Note: For Japanese My Vocabulary entries,spaces and symbols such as “:”, “|”, and similar characters are not supported in the Reading or Spelling fields. If any of these are included, an error message will appear and the word cannot be saved.

Tip: The following readings are treated as the same pronunciation. You only need to register one of them.
“きょうと”, “きょーと”, “きょおと”, “キョウト”, “キョート”
To delete a word, hover your mouse over it until the delete icon appears, then click the icon to remove the word.
Click Back to return to the home screen. When you start a new transcription, the registered words will be recognized correctly.

How to Add a My Vocabulary Entry from the Transcription Details Screen:

While editing the text, if a word (such as a technical term) has been misrecognized multiple times, place your cursor at the beginning of the word and drag to select the text. Once selected, click Add to vocabulary.
Enter the correct Kana and Expected word, then choose a Word type. If you want to replace all instances at once, check the box at the bottom. Finally, click Add and Replace.

Notta Mobile App

Note: The My Vocabulary option is only available when the spoken language is set to Japanese in your settings.

Tap Mine in the bottom-right corner, then select My Vocabulary.
Tap Add More On the Team plan, you can register up to 1,000 custom words.
Enter the Kana and Expected words, then choose a Word type. The word will be saved automatically.

The following readings are treated as the same pronunciation, so you only need to register one of them:
"きょうと" "きょーと" "きょおと" "キョウト" "キョート"
To delete a word, swipe left on it and tap Delete.
Tap < in the top-left corner, then start transcription.
Your registered words will now be recognized correctly!

Add words in bulk

Note:

Bulk word import is available only on the Business and Enterprise plans.
Web only

Click on your profile image on top right corner > Settings.
Click My Vocabulary, switch to the Japanese Vocabulary tab.

Click Upload and Download > Upload
In Step 2, click Download the Template to download the template file.

Tip: The Japanese My Vocabulary template is available at the end of this article. Feel free to download and use it.
Follow the guidelines in Step 3 to add words to the template.
Upload the completed word list. (Supported file formats: csv, xlsx, xls)
The words will be registered automatically.
If there are errors in the word list, an error message will appear. Click here to download the error details and review the cause of the issue.
If you continue despite the error, invalid entries will be skipped and valid words registered. Click the Click to download for details button to see the reason for each error.
